Bears are a lot more intimidating when they are in your place of residence and getting panicky. Hitting them in the nose with a book helps.

We’re having an unusually cold and wet spring over here, so hopefully Craig is keeping warm, staying dry, and stayin’ alive (insert necessary dance moves here).

yes, he has departed. He started from Campo at 7:00 am on Thursday 19th. (that was 2:00 am on Friday morning for those of us still in New Zealand). Lack of total wireless coverage, or any suitable wireless device, will mean he can’t send a post until he gets to a telephone.
The last word was an email as he left his host’s house in San Diego.

That looks like a contented, well-fed bear. As I understand it, thru-hikers try NOT to feed the bears along the trail. They may not be quite as contented.
